Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced an ambitious plan to launch a new era of American naval strength, revealing that the United States Navy will soon begin building an entirely new class of massive battleships. The move is part of a wider push to revive domestic shipbuilding, strengthen military deterrence, and reassert what Trump described as America’s dominance at sea.
Speaking at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said he had given formal approval for the immediate construction of two next-generation battleships, calling them the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever planned by the US. He described the vessels as the foundation of a future “Golden Fleet” that would redefine naval warfare.
According to Trump, the new battleships will surpass historic US warships in size, speed, and firepower. The President said construction timelines would be aggressive, with work expected to begin almost immediately and the first ships targeted for completion in around two-and-a-half years. While the initial phase includes two vessels, Trump indicated that the long-term vision could see the Navy operating a fleet of 20 to 25 such battleships.
Framing the project as both a defence and economic initiative, Trump stressed that the ships would be built entirely in American shipyards. He said the programme would create thousands of skilled jobs and help restore the country’s industrial base, while urging defence contractors to reinvest profits into manufacturing capacity instead of stock buybacks.
