Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has once again mounted a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging large-scale manipulation of India’s democratic institutions and questioning the fairness of recent elections. Speaking at an academic interaction in Berlin, Gandhi claimed that the country is witnessing what he described as a systematic weakening of its institutional framework.

Addressing students and faculty, Gandhi said that the Congress party has consistently raised concerns over the conduct of elections in India. Referring to the 2024 Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, he alleged that the electoral process in these states was not conducted on a level playing field. According to him, the party formally approached the Election Commission with specific complaints but did not receive satisfactory responses.

Gandhi argued that the issue goes beyond electoral outcomes and reflects a deeper problem within democratic systems. He claimed that independent institutions meant to ensure fairness and accountability are under pressure, and that opposition voices are increasingly sidelined.

The Congress leader also alleged misuse of central investigative agencies, stating that enforcement bodies are being selectively deployed against political opponents. He said the party believes that these agencies have become tools to intimidate dissenting voices rather than uphold the rule of law.

Responding strongly to Gandhi’s remarks, the BJP accused him of tarnishing India’s image on foreign soil. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress leader has a pattern of making such claims abroad and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated propaganda. The BJP maintained that India’s democratic institutions remain strong and credible.
