Lucknow: A fresh political clash has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the BJP and Election Commission of India (ECI) were “manipulating” the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, has dismissed the allegations as a sign of “panic” within the SP ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Responding strongly, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said Akhilesh Yadav’s comments reveal “deep frustration” after consecutive electoral setbacks.
Maurya said, “Akhilesh Yadav makes these allegations only because he knows the Samajwadi Party has no ground left in Uttar Pradesh. After Bihar, he will face the same disappointment here. BJP won Magadh despite their confidence there, and we will win Awadh too in 2027.”
Senior BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain also took a sharp dig at Yadav, saying the SP chief was “copying excuses” made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.
Hussain remarked, “Ever since their defeat in Bihar, SP leaders are hunting for reasons to justify their future losses. They know what is coming in Uttar Pradesh, so they are creating narratives in advance.”
Both BJP leaders insisted that the ruling party had “no need to interfere” in the SIR process, accusing Akhilesh Yadav of “misleading people” and “undermining democratic institutions.”
Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav doubled down on his allegations, claiming the BJP was working with the ECI to “wrongfully delete more than 50,000 votes” in constituencies where the INDIA bloc had performed strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He further alleged that the SIR was being conducted in a “politically targeted manner” in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to benefit the BJP.
The Election Commission is carrying out the Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and Union Territories, with the updated voter list expected to be released on February 7, 2026.
