Delhi: In an emotional and reflective farewell address at the Supreme Court on Thursday, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai underscored that the judiciary’s credibility is built not just by judges, but by every individual who keeps the institution running—from the bar to the registry to the supporting staff.
Speaking at the farewell organised by the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), CJI Gavai said that judges may be the public face of the institution, but judicial decision-making is a collective effort.
“People only see the judges when a judgment is delivered. But behind every decision stands the entire Supreme Court—the bar, the registry, the staff. Unless all stakeholders work together, the institution cannot function at its best,” he said, urging that both the Supreme Court Bar Association and SCAORA must be consulted in all matters concerning the bar.
Emphasises Personal Journey of Secularism
Reflecting on his personal beliefs, CJI Gavai said he practices Buddhism but has always been deeply secular. He credited his father—an admirer of Dr BR Ambedkar—for instilling a respectful embrace of all religions.
He recalled accompanying his father to various places during political engagements: “If someone suggested visiting a Dargah or a Gurudwara, he would go. I was brought up to respect every faith. That is what secularism truly means.”
A Tenure Marked by Balance and Reform
Justice Gavai assumed office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. His tenure, though short—lasting nearly six months—capped a six-and-a-half-year journey in the Supreme Court. During this period, he presided over key constitutional matters and administrative reforms.
Before concluding his address, he formally recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, ensuring a smooth transition at the top court.
