Navi Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first phase of the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, a landmark Rs 19,650 crore Greenfield project that is poised to transform India’s aviation landscape. The airport, developed under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, will operate alongside Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to ease congestion and elevate the city’s status as a global multi-airport hub.

Spanning 1,160 hectares, NMIA is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually and process 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo. The Prime Minister is expected to undertake a walkthrough of the state-of-the-art airport before the formal inauguration scheduled around 3:30 pm.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared his excitement on social media, posting a video highlighting the upcoming unveiling of this grand project.

Domestic flights from NMIA are expected to begin operations soon, while international services are slated to commence by December 2025. The airport will feature four modern terminals and two parallel runways, designed to efficiently manage growing air traffic.

A dedicated VVIP terminal is also planned, with construction set to begin in 2026 and completion targeted for 2030. The terminal’s architectural design, conceptualized by London-based Zaha Hadid Architects, draws inspiration from the lotus flower, combining modern aesthetics with cultural elements. Artistic installations reflecting Maharashtra’s rich history and heritage will further enhance the airport’s prominence.
