Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a petition alleging that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s name was illegally included in the voter list in 1980, three years before she obtained Indian citizenship.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia, who had reserved the order a day earlier, rejected the plea filed by Vikas Tripathi under Section 175(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The plea had sought a police investigation into the matter.

The petitioner argued that Gandhi’s name appeared in the New Delhi constituency’s electoral roll in January 1980 but was later deleted in 1982, alongside the name of Sanjay Gandhi following his death. He further alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s name was re-entered in 1983.

Senior advocate Narang pointed out, “In 1980, the proof of residence was probably a ration card or a passport. If she was a citizen, then why was her name deleted in 1982?”
