Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Single Identification Register (SIR) initiative, emphasizing the role of voter ID cards and Aadhaar as valid identity proofs. She stated, “Voter card is an ID proof and the Aadhaar card has been included (in Bihar SIR). Those who do not have it will get it made. I feel the EPIC card should also be included (in SIR). We are against SIR and three CECs have said that SIR takes 2-3 years and cannot be done hastily.”

The CM highlighted concerns over the feasibility and speed of implementing SIR, noting that the Election Commission of India has suggested the process takes at least 2–3 years to complete. Banerjee’s remarks reflect her party’s position against hurried implementation of SIR and stress the importance of inclusion of EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) alongside other ID proofs.
