Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) newly proposed ward formation and boundary restructuring have sparked widespread anger and disappointment among citizens and political aspirants.
According to official data, the civic body’s election department has received nearly 2,500 objections against the new ward plan, compared to just 1,000 suggestions. The sheer scale of resistance reflects the deep dissatisfaction and mistrust among Navi Mumbaikars.
Former corporators, social workers aspiring to contest elections, and ordinary residents have raised strong concerns that the new ward structure is unfair, politically motivated, and skewed to benefit select groups. Critics allege that the boundaries have been redrawn without factoring in population density, community representation, or geographical convenience.
Several ex-corporators openly accused the NMMC of deliberately weakening their traditional voter bases by arbitrarily merging or splitting wards. Social organisations too expressed disappointment, claiming that the voices of ordinary citizens have been ignored in the entire exercise.
Instead of bringing balanced representation, the restructuring has triggered confusion, resentment, and mistrust among citizens. With more than double the number of objections compared to supportive suggestions, the credibility of NMMC’s process has now come under intense public scrutiny.
The controversy has dented public faith in the civic body and raised tough questions about transparency, accountability, and political neutrality in ward formation. Facing mounting pressure, NMMC’s election department may now be compelled to revisit and justify its decisions before finalising the new ward boundaries.
