Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a high-level bilateral meeting in Tianjin on Sunday, a day before the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This was PM Modi’s first visit to China in seven years and his first one-on-one engagement with Xi in China since 2018.
The meeting is being seen as a significant step in reshaping India-China ties after years of strained relations. Here are the 10 biggest takeaways from the talks:
- First bilateral meeting in China after 7 years – Modi’s return to Chinese soil for formal talks with Xi comes after a long gap marked by the Ladakh standoff. He was accompanied by NSA Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
- Thanks for SCO invitation – Modi expressed gratitude to Xi for the invitation to the SCO Summit and lauded China’s leadership in steering the grouping.
- Border management agreement finalised – Both sides reached an understanding on border management, aimed at reducing friction and building confidence along the frontier.
- Disengagement brings calm – Modi highlighted that troop disengagement after the 2024 Kazan discussions has led to stability in sensitive border zones.
- Kailash Mansarovar Yatra resumes – After years of disruption, Indian pilgrims can once again travel to Tibet for the sacred journey, marking a symbolic breakthrough.
- Direct flights to restart – Air connectivity between India and China will be restored, paving the way for smoother people-to-people exchanges.
- Focus on 2.8 billion people’s welfare – Modi emphasised that cooperation between India and China directly impacts nearly 2.8 billion people, with wider benefits for humanity.
- Trust and respect as guiding principles – The Prime Minister underlined India’s readiness to advance ties based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.
- SCO Summit begins September 1 – The bilateral talks were held ahead of the SCO leaders’ meeting, which will also see the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
- Global trade backdrop – The dialogue unfolded amid rising tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on India over Russian oil imports, while exempting China – a development that lent added weight to India-China engagement.
