Mumbai-Goa Highway: Heavy Vehicle Movement Restricted During Ganesh Festival to Ease Traffic

Mumbai: In view of the upcoming Ganesh festival, authorities have announced temporary restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles on the busy Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66). The order, issued by Panvel Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Nilesh Dhote, aims to ensure smoother traffic flow as lakhs of devotees are expected to travel towards Konkan for the celebrations.

According to the notification, vehicles weighing more than 16 tons—including trucks, multi-axle carriers, trailers, and lorries—will not be permitted to use NH-66 on certain days. The ban will be in place from August 23 (00:01 hrs) to August 28 (23:00 hrs), again on August 31 (08:00 hrs to 23:00 hrs), September 2 (08:00 hrs to 23:00 hrs), and from September 6 (08:00 hrs) to September 7 (20:00 hrs).

The annual migration of devotees from Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Vasai, and surrounding areas to Konkan typically causes severe congestion on this route. To prevent traffic chaos, the Transport Department has decided to keep heavy vehicles off the highway during peak travel days.

However, the ban will not extend to vehicles transporting essential commodities like milk, fuel, LPG, food grains, vegetables, medicines, and medical oxygen. Similarly, cargo linked to JNPT and Jaigarh ports, as well as trucks involved in highway widening and repair work, will be exempt. In such cases, transporters are required to obtain special permits from the Transport Department or Highway Police.
