Manish Tewari Blasts Controversial Bills, Calls Them Assault on India’s Constitutional Safeguards

New Delhi: Congress MP Manish Tewari on Wednesday strongly condemned the introduction of three contentious bills in Parliament, describing them as an attack on the very basic structure of the Constitution of India. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Tewari warned that the legislation could be misused by state authorities and undermine fundamental constitutional principles.

“The basic thing is that these bills violate the core of the Constitution. The rule of law clearly states that one is innocent until proven guilty. Yet, these bills open the door for political misuse by state instrumentalities whose arbitrary conduct has repeatedly been censured by the Supreme Court,” Tewari said.

He further elaborated that the proposed laws are destructive of Article 21, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty, and effectively discard existing constitutional safeguards. “This Bill throws all existing Constitutional protections to the winds. Its potential for misuse is enormous, and it could seriously harm the democratic fabric of the nation,” Tewari added.

The remarks highlight growing opposition in Parliament against the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with critics warning of a possible slide toward authoritarianism if the legislation is passed without scrutiny.
