New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has commented on the ongoing tariff dispute between India and the United States, urging caution while acknowledging that President Donald Trump’s approach to negotiations has altered the trade dynamics in a significant way.
Speaking to reporters, Tharoor said, “Let me stress, first of all, there is an ongoing negotiation. So it’s not as if this is the final word. Mr. Trump is known for somewhat assertive negotiating tactics. So it is possible this is part of a negotiating style which we have not seen before in international diplomacy and which is therefore very difficult for us to understand and accept.”
Tharoor noted that while the situation remains fluid, the developments cannot be ignored. “Having said that, what is clear to me is that the picture has changed for us in rather important ways, at least on the trade dimension,” he added.
The remarks come amid heightened trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, with the US recently imposing additional tariffs on certain Indian exports. Negotiations between the two nations are still underway, and both sides have indicated a willingness to continue discussions to resolve the differences.
