Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik Passes Away at 79 After Prolonged Illness

New Delhi: Satyapal Malik, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and veteran political leader, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. He died at 1:12 PM at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness. His death was announced through a post on his official X account.

A significant Jat figure from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, Malik began his political journey as a student activist. He was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 1974 as a member of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal.

Malik’s political career spanned both Houses of Parliament—serving as a Rajya Sabha member and later as a Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh on a Janata Dal ticket. Over the years, he was associated with several political parties including Congress, Lok Dal, and the Samajwadi Party.

In 2017, he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar and briefly held additional charge of Odisha. His most defining role came in August 2018 when he took over as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. It was during his tenure that the Central Government abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories. Malik also served as Governor during the 2019 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans lost their lives.

His political legacy is marked by significant moments in India’s constitutional and security history.
