“Main Raja Nahi Hoon, Banna Bhi Nahi Chahta”: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: In a powerful and symbolic moment at the Annual Legal Conclave 2025, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi publicly rejected monarchic comparisons, saying:

“Main Raja nahi hoon. Raja banna bhi nahi chahta hoon. Main Raja ke concept ke against hoon.”

The statement came in response to supporters chanting, “Desh ka Raja kaisa ho? Rahul Gandhi jaisa ho” during his welcome. Gandhi, visibly firm, stopped the sloganeering and emphasized his commitment to constitutional democracy over any idea of inherited power or monarchy.

“India is a democracy. The people are sovereign. No leader should ever be above accountability,” he added, reinforcing his party’s message against political authoritarianism.

His speech, focused on democratic accountability and the dangers of centralised leadership, drew applause from legal professionals and students in attendance. The remark — “Main Raja nahi hoon” — quickly trended on social media, drawing both praise and political reaction.
