Centre Planning Anti-Conversion Law, Says MoS Pankaj Bhoyar: “Forced or Induced Conversions Are Certainly Wrong”

Mumbai: Minister of State for Home Affairs, Pankaj Rajesh Bhoyar, confirmed that the central government is actively considering the introduction of an anti-conversion law in the upcoming session of Parliament. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Bhoyar underlined the need to curb forced, induced, or coerced religious conversions, calling such actions a violation of personal freedom.

“If someone is being converted through force or by inducement, it is certainly wrong,” Bhoyar said. “We are working towards bringing a law on this in the upcoming session. About ten states already have such a law in place… Bringing in this law will be very beneficial, as there are cases where people are being forcibly converted, lured with inducements, or sometimes pressurized, despite it not being their will.”

Bhoyar’s comments come amid increasing demands from BJP leaders and allied organisations to introduce a nationwide legislation to regulate religious conversions, especially in light of recent incidents reported in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Currently, around 10 Indian states have laws prohibiting religious conversions through force, fraud, or allurement. However, the absence of a central framework has led to inconsistencies in interpretation and enforcement.
