Kolkata College Gangrape: Security Guard Held ; Prime Accused Linked to TMC’s Student Wing, 4th Arrest so Far

Kolkata: The Kolkata police on Saturday arrested a security guard from South Calcutta Law College in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year law student, marking the fourth arrest in the horrific case.

According to police officials, the guard was first detained for questioning after the survivor’s complaint accused him of failing to protect her during the assault. “The guard failed to carry out his duty,” an officer said, adding that investigators are now verifying whether he was the only guard present on campus at the time of the attack on June 25.

The young woman had gone to the college to fill out an examination form but was reportedly coerced into staying back in the student union room even after completing her work. In her statement, she alleged that she was locked inside a guard room by prime accused Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and practising criminal lawyer, who then sexually assaulted her with the help of two others — Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20).

Tragically, the survivor also recounted being struck on the head with a hockey stick, leaving her injured.

Political controversy has now erupted, with the BJP sharing photos of Mishra alongside leaders of the TMC’s student wing, raising questions about whether he enjoyed political patronage.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and more arrests could follow if others are found to have been complicit in either the assault or the cover-up.
