Mumbai: After a night of intense rainfall and thunderstorms, Mumbai woke up to relatively calm skies on Sunday. While many residents hoped for a reprieve, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more turbulent weather ahead for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts.
The IMD issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rain at isolated places, and an ‘orange’ alert for Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, where very heavy showers are expected in the next 48 hours.
According to civic officials, no major waterlogging incidents were reported in the city, bringing much-needed relief to daily commuters. In the 24-hour period ending 8 am Sunday, the island city recorded 31 mm rainfall, while eastern and western suburbs received 21 mm and 20 mm, respectively.
Meanwhile, coastal high tide warnings are in place. A high tide of 3.55 metres is expected at 2:37 am Monday, and a low tide of 1.06 metres at 8:20 am, raising potential concerns in low-lying areas.
The current spell of rain has been a double-edged sword—providing relief from summer heat but also raising flooding and travel disruption risks across several states.
