Goa CM Overrules Health Minister’s Suspension Order of GMCH Doctor, Says Dr Rudresh Kuttikar Will Not Be Suspended

Panaji: In a dramatic turn of events, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday stepped in to overrule the suspension of a senior doctor at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), defusing a rapidly escalating controversy involving Health Minister Vishwajit Rane.

“I have reviewed the issue at Goa Medical College and held discussions with the Health Minister. I want to assure the people of Goa that Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar will not be suspended,” CM Sawant announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The decision came just hours after Health Minister Rane stood by his earlier move to suspend GMCH’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, over what he described as “arrogant behaviour” towards an elderly patient during a surprise inspection on Saturday.

Minister Rane defended his stance strongly, saying, “I will not apologise for standing up for a patient who was denied the care she needed.”

The controversy was triggered when Rane made an unannounced visit to the GMCH casualty ward, during which he publicly reprimanded Dr. Kuttikar for allegedly refusing necessary treatment to an elderly woman. According to Rane, the woman’s family—one of whom is a senior journalist—complained that she was refused daily injections by hospital staff because it was a public holiday.

The health minister described the doctor’s conduct as “unacceptable” and ordered an immediate suspension, which sparked sharp reactions from sections of the medical community and the public alike.
