Berlin: In a firm and unequivocal statement from Berlin on Friday (May 23), External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar asserted that India will never succumb to nuclear blackmail from Pakistan, and reiterated that any engagement with the neighbouring country would be strictly bilateral.

Speaking at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Jaishankar made it clear that India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism remains unchanged, especially in the wake of the brutal April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I came to Berlin in the immediate aftermath of India responding to the Pahalgam terror attack. India has zero tolerance for terrorism. India will never give in to nuclear blackmail, and India will deal with Pakistan purely bilaterally. There should be no confusion in any quarter in that regard,” Jaishankar stated.

He further thanked Germany for its continued support and understanding in India’s fight against terrorism, saying, “We also value Germany’s understanding that every nation has the right to defend itself against terrorism.”

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, echoing India’s stance, expressed deep sorrow over the Pahalgam attack and affirmed India’s right to defend itself.

“We were appalled by the brutal terrorist attack on India on April 22. We condemned this attack on civilians in the strongest terms. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all victims and their families,” Wadephul said.
“After military attacks on both sides, India, of course, has every right to defend itself against terrorism.”

However, Wadephul also emphasized the need to preserve the ceasefire and push for dialogue between India and Pakistan.

“The fact that the truce is now in place is something we greatly appreciate. What is important now is that this truce remains stable and that dialogue can happen in order to find bilateral solutions for that conflict, taking into account the vital interests of both sides,” he added.

Wadephul also noted that Germany and India have long maintained a strong partnership on counter-terrorism cooperation, which both nations aim to intensify further in the coming years.
