Islamabad: As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan on Friday (May 23) issued a strong defence of its nuclear command and control systems, claiming they are “robust” and “secure”.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad, Pakistan responded to growing global scrutiny and domestic calls in India for international oversight of its nuclear weapons program.

“Pakistan remains fully confident in the strength of its comprehensive nuclear security regime and the robustness of its command and control structures,” the FO said.

However, the statement did not stop there. The Pakistani government also took aim at India, asserting that the international community should be more concerned about India’s nuclear weapons. It claimed that what it described as the “escalating radicalisation” within India’s political sphere, media, and certain sections of society raised “legitimate nuclear security concerns.”

The reaction from Islamabad came shortly after India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during a visit to Srinagar, called for Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal to be brought under international scrutiny.

His statement follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks, where he declared that India would not tolerate nuclear blackmail and would continue to respond firmly to any form of cross-border terrorism.

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours have spiked after Operation Sindoor, launched by India in response to the Pahalgam terror strike, which killed 26 civilians, most of them tourists. The operation targeted multiple terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, triggering retaliatory shelling and drone attacks from the Pakistani side.
