Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Friday provided relief to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra by granting him protection from arrest in connection with a case registered over his alleged “traitor” remark directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a comedy performance.

A bench comprising Justices Sarang Kotwal and S M Modak admitted Kamra’s petition seeking to quash the FIR filed at Khar Police Station. This move effectively means that Kamra’s case will now be heard in detail, though the investigation into the matter will continue.

Kamra had been booked after referring to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) during a stand-up show in Mumbai. The term, which loosely translates to “betrayer,” triggered outrage among supporters of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. In the aftermath of the show, workers from the party allegedly vandalised the studio where the event was recorded.

In his plea, Kamra pointed out that he currently resides in Tamil Nadu and feared returning to Maharashtra due to threats he had received following the incident. The court, which had earlier granted Kamra interim protection from arrest, upheld this safeguard while allowing the legal process to unfold.
