Harish Rawat Slams ED’s ‘Political Bias’: Says Agencies Strengthening BJP Instead of Nation

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has strongly criticized the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies, particularly the Enforcement Directorate (ED), by the Union government. Rawat accused the BJP-led Centre of weaponizing the ED for political purposes instead of using it to strengthen the country.

His remarks came after Union Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary revealed in Parliament on March 18 that the ED had registered 193 cases against former politicians in the last decade but managed to secure convictions in only two. Rawat questioned the agency’s effectiveness and alleged that it was being used selectively to target opposition leaders.

“Out of all the cases they registered against politicians, including MPs and CMs, they could only prove charges in two instances. But our concern is about the misuse of ED. The agency shouldn’t be used for political vendettas. Their integrity should be maintained,” Rawat told ANI.

He also pointed out that the Congress government had initially established these agencies with the intent of maintaining law and order, not political persecution. “The investigative powers they are using today were given by the Congress. All these institutions were set up by us. But today, instead of serving the country, they are being used to strengthen the BJP,” he added.

When asked about the inception of the ED, which was formed in 1956 under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Rawat emphasized Nehru’s role in creating institutions that were once a matter of national pride but are now allegedly being misused. “Nehru established all the organizations that we take pride in today, but unfortunately, they are being exploited by the current government,” he said.
