Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has initiated a sweeping crackdown targeting illegal constructions, unauthorized power connections, and financial transactions of 7,612 individuals accused of crimes such as bootlegging, gambling, assault, encroachment, and illegal mining. The crackdown was triggered after a violent mob rampaged through Ahmedabad’s Vastral area last week, attacking passersby and vandalizing vehicles with swords and sticks over a dispute concerning a food stall.

A preliminary police probe revealed that the violence stemmed from a rivalry between local strongmen Pankaj Bhavsar and Sangram Sikarwar. Bhavsar allegedly sent his men to attack Sikarwar to prevent him from opening the stall following his release from jail. When the attackers did not find Sikarwar at his home, they indiscriminately targeted people and vehicles, reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

Following the incident, Gujarat Police Chief Vikas Sahay directed a statewide crackdown within 100 hours, leading to mass demolitions, arrests, and financial probes. Authorities deployed earthmoving machines for demolitions on Thursday, just hours after the deadline ended. The police action has drawn attention to the Supreme Court’s November ruling that warned against “bulldozer justice,” emphasizing that demolitions must not be used as punitive measures against those accused of crimes.

The court underlined that executive actions must adhere to the rule of law and due process, stating that shelter is a fundamental right and cannot be taken away arbitrarily. While state officials argue that the demolitions are legally justified, critics claim it reflects a growing trend of extrajudicial punitive measures. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their investigation, ensuring law and order across Gujarat.
