Nagpur: The Nagpur police have intensified their crackdown on Monday’s communal violence, registering four new FIRs, including sedition charges against Minorities Democratic Party (MDP) city president Fahim Khan and five others. Khan is accused of using social media to incite unrest and glorify attacks on the police amid the clashes triggered by a right-wing call to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb.
With Jummah prayers scheduled today, security forces are on high alert, and strong police deployment has been ordered to prevent further escalations.
Crackdown on Social Media Incitement
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Lohit Matani confirmed that Khan has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 152, which pertains to endangering India’s sovereignty and spreading misinformation online. He is accused of editing protest videos to glorify stone-pelting against law enforcement.
Authorities have also seized his digital devices as part of the investigation. The four new FIRs involve over 50 social media accounts, with some accused of sharing violent protest videos, while others allegedly spread misleading content to escalate tensions.
Action Against Extremist Groups
In a significant development, the police have also booked Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists for allegedly fueling the unrest. Details of over 230 accounts have been shared with Meta, X (formerly Twitter), and other platforms, seeking the removal of inflammatory content.
