New Delhi: In a significant decision, Members of Parliament (MPs) will now have access to a higher budget for renovating their official residences, as the House committee has approved a 230% increase in funds. The renovation limit has been raised from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, a move seen as essential given the rising costs of construction and maintenance.
The decision, communicated through a Lok Sabha Secretariat circular, acknowledges that MPs often require modifications to their bungalows and apartments in North and South Avenues, including additions like office spaces and guest rooms.
“Members are informed that the financial limit for additions/alterations in MPs’ residences has been revised from ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000 by the House committee,” the official circular stated.
CPWD to Oversee Renovation Work
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the government’s construction arm, has been tasked with overseeing all renovation work for MPs’ residences in New Delhi. The agency will ensure that all modifications strictly adhere to government guidelines.
“CPWD has been instructed to review estimates submitted to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, ensuring strict compliance with the relevant rules for additions/alterations in MPs’ Flats/Bungalows,” the circular added.
Justified Increase or Controversial Move?
While many lawmakers have welcomed the move, citing the need to modernize aging accommodations, critics argue that such a hike in renovation funds should be matched with similar welfare initiatives for the general public. However, Lok Sabha officials maintain that the revision was long overdue and necessary to meet rising costs.
