Mumbai: Veteran social activist Anna Hazare has criticized former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his government’s excise policy, stating that while Kejriwal initially did a good job, he lost public support after opening liquor shops across the city.

“The earlier CM was doing a good job and became Delhi chief minister thrice. I did not say anything against him then. But when he started opening liquor vends and issuing licenses, I got upset,” Hazare told reporters. He emphasized that a chief minister should set an example for society, but Kejriwal’s decisions led to public backlash.

Hazare, who has always opposed alcohol consumption, was once Kejriwal’s ally in the anti-corruption movement but distanced himself after the AAP leader entered politics.

On Rekha Gupta’s victory, Hazare expressed pride, saying, “Delhi now has a woman chief minister, and people voted for her because of her pure thoughts and deeds.”

The BJP’s recent victory ended AAP’s rule in Delhi, with Kejriwal losing his seat amid ongoing investigations by the CBI and ED into alleged irregularities in the 2021-22 excise policy. The controversial policy was later scrapped, but it remains a key issue in the political discourse surrounding Kejriwal’s downfall.
