New Delhi: In a late-night incident on Friday, signboards of roads named after Mughal emperors—Akbar Road, Babar Road, and Humayun Road—were vandalized and blackened in New Delhi. Reports suggest that a group of youth defaced the boards and placed posters of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on them.

Videos of the act surfaced online, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. A case has reportedly been registered, and officials have begun probing the matter.

The incident comes amid long-standing demands by right-wing groups to rename roads bearing Mughal-era names. This is not the first time such an act has occurred—similar instances were reported in 2018 and 2021.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Chhaava, a film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, adding to the ongoing discourse on historical narratives and legacy. The latest act of vandalism has once again fueled debates over the renaming of roads in the national capital.
