The Maharashtra government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe a conspiracy allegedly aimed at framing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and other leaders of the Mahayuti coalition during the tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
The SIT will be headed by Satyanarayan Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Mumbai, and has been instructed to submit a report within 30 days.
This decision follows claims made by businessman Sanjay Punamiya, who alleged that sting operations aired by the media revealed a former police officer discussing plans to have Fadnavis and Shinde arrested. According to Punamiya, the arrests were linked to an ongoing case involving him.
BJP MLC Pravin Darekar had called for the formation of an SIT, alleging a conspiracy to falsely implicate Fadnavis and Shinde. Darekar also presented audio recordings as evidence of the plot.
The formation of the SIT came after Pravin Darekar raised the issue in the Maharashtra Legislative Council during the winter session of December 2024, claiming that the conspiracy took place during the MVA government’s tenure.
The SIT consists of Rajiv Jain, Deputy Inspector General of the State Reserve Police Force, Navnath Dhavle, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, and Adikrao Pol, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. The team has been tasked with investigating the matter promptly.
