New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Express’ today from New Delhi’s Safdarjung railway station via remote link. This state-of-the-art tourist train is dedicated to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) aged between 45 and 65, aiming to reconnect them with India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

The train’s maiden journey begins on January 9, a symbolic date commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915. Over three weeks, the train will traverse key pilgrimage and tourist destinations across India, including Ayodhya, Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, Mahabalipuram, Rameswaram, Madurai, Kochi, Goa, Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), Ajmer, Pushkar, and Agra.

With a capacity to accommodate 156 passengers, the Pravasi Bharatiya Express is being launched under the Ministry of External Affairs’ Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana (PTDY), in collaboration with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The initiative offers a unique travel experience to NRIs, fostering a stronger connection to their roots and heritage.

In addition, PM Modi will inaugurate the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This flagship event, held from January 8-10 in partnership with the Odisha government, is themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.” It will host participants from over 50 countries, providing a platform for the global Indian community to engage and exchange ideas.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Express and the PBD convention highlight the government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Indian diaspora, celebrating their contributions while reconnecting them with the nation’s cultural legacy.
