Zuhaib Yousf Mir calls for J&K to be declared a dry state to protect its culture and public health

Srinagar:  In a recent tweet, Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zuhaib Yousf Mir expressed grave concern over the growing prevalence of liquor consumption in Kashmir, calling for Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) to be declared a “Dry State” to protect its cultural values and public health.

Mir pointed out the alarming rise in the number of liquor shops, as well as the increasing sales and consumption of alcohol across the valley since 2019. He highlighted the stark contrast between the region’s rich cultural heritage—rooted in Sufi traditions, Shaivite practices, and a vibrant history of shrines and temples—and the growing acceptance of practices that, he argued, threaten the social fabric and well-being of Kashmiris.

“It’s deeply disappointing to see how Kashmir is turning into a cesspool of drunkards and debauchery,” Mir said in his tweet. He stressed that the cultural degradation seen in this rise in alcohol consumption was a direct contradiction to the values historically upheld by the people of the region.

Mir further emphasized that J&K, like other states governed by the BJP such as Bihar and Gujarat, could also adopt policies that promote a healthier lifestyle and protect its rich cultural legacy by implementing a dry state policy.

“The state’s cultural and spiritual heritage is something we must cherish and protect,” said Mir. “If Bihar and Gujarat can be dry states, why can’t Jammu and Kashmir? It’s time for us to collectively demand J&K be declared a dry state.”

In his call for action, Mir urged citizens, policymakers, and political leaders to come together to protect the cultural identity of Kashmir and ensure the health and well-being of its people. He reiterated that this issue transcends political boundaries and should be approached as a matter of urgent societal concern.
