Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari revealed alarming statistics in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, stating that 60% of the 1.78 lakh fatalities in road accidents in India are from the 18-34 age group.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Gadkari said many individuals display a blatant disregard for traffic laws, citing instances of two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets and motorists jumping red lights. “It is unfortunate that 60% of the 1.78 lakh road accident victims fall in the 18 to 34 age group. Despite this, there is still no fear of the law,” he remarked.

Expressing his embarrassment on the global stage, Gadkari added, “When I attend international conferences discussing road accidents, I try to hide my face.” He underscored the urgency of addressing road safety issues and recalled his target of reducing accidents by 50% when he first assumed office.

The minister also pointed out regional disparities in road accident statistics, noting that Uttar Pradesh records the highest number of fatalities among states, while Delhi leads in road accident deaths among cities.

Gadkari’s statement sheds light on the pressing need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and public awareness campaigns to tackle the growing menace of road accidents in India.
