Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday appealed to opposition members to allow the smooth functioning of Parliament amid ongoing protests during the winter session. Birla urged the opposition MPs to raise their concerns through proper channels, such as questioning government representatives and engaging in discussions, rather than disrupting proceedings with protests.

“I expect you all to do the same,” Birla stated, as protests continued to disrupt the proceedings in the House. Despite his appeal, the chaos continued, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the session until 12 noon.

Addressing the dissenting MPs, Birla emphasized the sanctity and importance of Parliament. “The Parliament is a holy place, there is a decorum and dignity that needs to be maintained here, as this is the place where we obtained our freedom, and it’s the most important place in the largest democracy. The nation’s wishes and ambitions are fulfilled in this very place, so we need to respect and honor it,” Birla stated.

The Speaker condemned the ongoing protests, which included sloganeering and the display of posters, describing them as not only undignified but also contrary to the procedural rules of the House. Birla further urged the opposition to utilize the Zero Hour to raise important issues instead of preventing Parliament from functioning. “The opposition should use Zero Hour to raise issues instead of not letting the Parliament function at all,” Birla said.

Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar convened a meeting with opposition party leaders to ensure the smooth running of the House. According to sources, only three opposition leaders—DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, Congress’s Jairam Ramesh, and Pramod Tiwari—were present at the meeting.

During the discussions, opposition leaders expressed a willingness for the House to function, but emphasized that they should be given the opportunity to speak. The ongoing disruption highlights the growing tension between the ruling government and opposition parties in the current parliamentary session.
