A seemingly innocuous social media post by former Pakistani minister Ch Fawad Hussain has ignited a fresh round of political tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party on the eve of the third phase of the Lok Sabha election. Hussain’s post, shared on X, featured excerpts from a speech by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by the caption “Rahul on fire.”

However, what appeared to be a simple acknowledgment of Gandhi’s speech quickly escalated into a war of words between the BJP and Congress. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla wasted no time in seizing upon Hussain’s praise for Gandhi, insinuating a deeper connection between the Congress party and Pakistan.

“Citing previous instances of alleged collaboration between Congress and Pakistan, Poonawalla remarked, ‘Congress ka haath Pakistan ke saath’ (Congress’s hand is with Pakistan),” in response to Hussain’s post.

Poonawalla’s reference to past events, including interactions between Congress leaders and Pakistani counterparts, further fueled the controversy. He accused Congress of maintaining close ties with individuals and entities associated with Pakistan, citing examples ranging from former Pakistani leader Hafiz Saeed’s endorsement of Congress to purported meetings between Congress leaders and Pakistani officials.

The BJP’s IT cell chief, Amit Malviya, also weighed in on the matter, questioning the extent of Congress’s association with Pakistan. Malviya highlighted Hussain’s background in the Imran Khan cabinet and drew parallels between Congress’s alleged alignment with Pakistan and historical ties to the Muslim League, the political party instrumental in the creation of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Hussain attempted to clarify his post, emphasizing his opposition to extremism and hate-mongering, regardless of geographical boundaries. In a bid to quell the growing backlash, he underscored his commitment to principles of inclusivity and tolerance.

The video clip shared by Hussain, featuring Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the Ram Mandir inauguration, inadvertently thrust the Congress leader into the center of the controversy. Gandhi’s questioning of the event’s inclusivity sparked debate, with critics and supporters alike dissecting his statements for political ammunition.

As the social media storm rages on, the political landscape ahead of the elections remains fraught with tension. With each side leveraging online platforms to rally support and undermine opponents, the digital battlefield continues to shape public perception and influence electoral outcomes.
