Renowned Bhojpuri singer and actor Pawan Singh, who recently withdrew his name as the BJP nominee from the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency, has announced his candidacy as an independent contestant from the Karakat parliamentary constituency in Bihar.

Expressing his decision to enter the political arena, Singh emphasized his commitment to fulfilling a promise made to his mother. “‘Mata Gurutara Bhumeru’ means mother is mightier than this land, and I had promised my mother that I would contest the elections this time,” Singh conveyed in Hindi on X.

With his sights set on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh’s decision places him in direct competition with Rajaram Singh of CPI(ML) Liberation, an integral part of the RJD-led grand alliance in Bihar.

Singh’s foray into politics marks a departure from his earlier nomination by the BJP for the Asansol seat, a decision he later retracted amidst controversy surrounding his candidature. While Singh did not specify the reason behind his withdrawal, criticism from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the alleged portrayal of women in his songs played a role in his decision.

However, Singh’s subsequent announcement to contest the Lok Sabha elections underscores his resolve to honor commitments made to his family and community. “I will fight the elections to fulfil the promise I made to my mother, my society, and the people,” Singh reiterated.

Meanwhile, the BJP has replaced Singh with BJP MP SS Ahluwalia as its candidate for the Asansol constituency. Ahluwalia is set to face TMC’s heavyweight candidate and prominent actor Shatrughan Sinha in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle in the industrial heartland of West Bengal.
