Elon Musk, the CEO of social media platform X, has announced plans to introduce a TV app next week, catering to Amazon and Samsung users, enabling them to access long-form videos seamlessly. This move marks the platform’s foray into the realm of television content, expanding its offerings beyond its traditional social media features.

Last October, X introduced an early version of video and audio calling for select users, with Musk expressing intentions to transform the platform into a comprehensive super app encompassing various services ranging from messaging to peer-to-peer payments, according to Reuters.

Responding to a user’s inquiry about accessing long-form videos on smart TVs, Musk confirmed the imminent launch of the TV app with a simple yet impactful “Coming soon” statement. A Fortune report, cited by Reuters, suggested that the TV app could resemble Google’s YouTube offering, indicating Musk’s ambition to compete with the video giant.

In its pursuit of becoming a “video-first platform,” X has been forming partnerships with notable figures such as former Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and former CNN anchor Don Lemon. These collaborations underscore the platform’s strategic shift towards prioritizing video content to engage users.

Despite facing challenges in retaining advertisers amidst controversies, particularly since Musk’s acquisition in 2022, X continues to innovate and expand its offerings. In a significant development, Musk revealed plans for X to obtain a money transmitter license in New York, with approval anticipated within the next few months. Additionally, the platform is poised to secure its license in California in the near future, further cementing its status as a multifaceted “everything app.”

Musk’s vision for X transcends traditional social media functionalities, aiming to emulate the success of Tencent’s WeChat app in China by incorporating features beyond communication, including financial transactions among users. With these strategic moves, Musk is steering X towards a path of evolution and diversification, positioning it as a versatile platform catering to various user needs beyond conventional social networking.
