The Punjab and Haryana High Court has delivered a scathing reprimand to the Haryana Government over the issue of multiple paroles granted to rape convict Gurmit Ram Rahim. In a stern directive, the court asserted that without its explicit permission, Ram Rahim cannot be released on parole in the future.
During the hearing, the court demanded detailed information from the Haryana government regarding the granting of parole to not only Ram Rahim but also to other prisoners with similar circumstances. This move underscores the court’s intention to scrutinize the parole process closely.
The court proceedings stemmed from a petition filed by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), challenging the parole granted to Ram Rahim by jail authorities. The SGPC argued vehemently against the repeated parole grants to Ram Rahim, citing the seriousness of the cases against him and his previous convictions. They contended that such leniency was unwarranted and urged the court to cancel the parole given to him.
Gurmit Ram Rahim stands convicted of raping two of his disciples, receiving a 20-year prison sentence. In addition, he was found guilty in 2021 of conspiring to murder Dera manager Ranjit Singh, resulting in a 16-year sentence. Despite these convictions, Ram Rahim has been granted parole on multiple occasions, prompting criticism and legal challenges.
In January of this year, Ram Rahim was granted a 50-day parole by the Rohtak divisional commissioner, set to end on March 10th, with the court ordering his surrender on the same day. This latest parole follows previous grants, including a 21-day parole in November last year, a 30-day parole in July 2023, and multiple other instances dating back to 2022 and 2021.
The High Court’s intervention comes as a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Gurmit Ram Rahim’s parole, signaling a heightened scrutiny of the parole process and its application to high-profile convicts. As the matter unfolds, stakeholders await further directives from the court regarding the future of Ram Rahim’s parole privileges and the broader implications for similar cases.
