Shiv Sena Leader Sanjay Raut Criticizes New Parliament Building, Says It is a “Five-Star Jail”

Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), launched a scathing critique of the current parliamentary setup on Thursday, likening the new parliament building to a “five-star jail” where legislative productivity is severely hampered.

Addressing the media, Raut expressed frustration over the challenges faced by legislators in the new Central Vista complex in New Delhi. “One should see the condition of Central Vista in New Delhi,” he remarked, highlighting the limitations hindering effective work within the new parliamentary premises.

Raut emphasized the inadequacies of the new parliament building, describing it as a place where productivity is stifled. “The new parliament is like a five-star jail where you can’t work,” he reiterated, echoing his earlier sentiment.

Furthermore, Raut announced his party’s intention to relocate parliamentary sessions to the historical old parliament building if the opposition INDIA bloc secures victory in the upcoming elections. “When we form our government, we will start our parliament session in our historical parliament,” he declared, underscoring his party’s commitment to leveraging traditional infrastructure for legislative proceedings.

The criticism comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of the new parliament building in May 2023, constructed at a cost of ₹971 crore. While designed to accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 300 members in the Rajya Sabha, the new complex has faced teething issues since its inception. Opposition MPs have voiced concerns about visibility within the sprawling complex, with some lamenting the need for binoculars to interact with colleagues.

In addition to criticizing the parliamentary setup, Raut took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its ambitious electoral targets for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Responding to BJP’s claims of securing over 400 seats, Raut remarked that the people of Maharashtra would have been more impressed if the target had been set at 600 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha.

Raut’s remarks follow an announcement on Wednesday regarding a seat-sharing formula within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. With the political landscape heating up, Raut’s critique and strategic positioning shed light on the evolving dynamics shaping India’s political future.
