In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a joint operation spearheaded by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in collaboration with the Navy and the Gujarat Police, resulted in the interception of a small ship late Tuesday night near Porbandar in the Arabian Sea. The operation led to the confiscation of a staggering 3,300 kilograms of narcotics, marking the largest offshore drug seizure in India to date.
The intercepted vessel, carrying five crew members of Pakistani nationality, was found to be transporting a substantial consignment of illicit substances, including 3089 kilograms of charas, 158 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 25 kilograms of morphine. The authorities swiftly apprehended all individuals onboard, preventing the illicit cargo from reaching its intended destination.
While the exact value of the seized drugs is yet to be officially disclosed, preliminary estimates indicate a significant sum, with charas alone commanding a price of ₹7 crore per kilogram in international markets. This underscores the magnitude of the operation and the considerable financial impact of disrupting drug trafficking networks.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the operation as a historic success, highlighting the Modi government’s steadfast commitment to combating drug proliferation in the country. He commended the collaborative efforts of the NCB, the Navy, and the Gujarat Police for their pivotal roles in executing the operation seamlessly.
“The historic success is a testament to our government’s unwavering commitment to making our nation drug-free. On this occasion, I congratulate the NCB, the Navy, and the Gujarat Police,” remarked Shah, underscoring the significance of the achievement in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a drug-free Bharat.
According to reports citing a senior official of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), the operation unfolded near the International Maritime Boundary Line in the Arabian Sea. Utilizing surveillance aircraft, the Indian Navy identified a suspicious dhow suspected of smuggling contraband, leading to the interception and subsequent seizure by a deployed naval ship.
As investigations into the matter continue, the successful operation stands as a testament to the collective resolve and coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies in combatting transnational organized crime and safeguarding national security.
