The Election Commission of India (ECI) has greenlit the name “Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar” for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra. This decision, made on Wednesday, marks the culmination of a prolonged dispute between Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, who aligned with the BJP and Shiv Sena in 2023.

The Sharad Pawar faction submitted three name preferences to the ECI as per their directives, facilitating their participation in the Rajya Sabha polls. However, the timing of the ECI’s verdict, so close to the scheduled elections, necessitated a special arrangement due to procedural requirements.

In accordance with the Conduct of Election Rules, lawmakers must display their ballot paper to the authorized party agent before casting their vote. Given the unique circumstances surrounding the faction led by Sharad Pawar, the ECI had to devise a solution to ensure compliance with the rules.

As a result, the ECI has granted a one-time option to the Sharad Pawar faction to claim a new name for its political formation. This provision enables them to participate effectively in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra, with the opportunity to provide three name preferences for the ballot.

The ECI’s decision signifies a significant development in the ongoing political dynamics within the Nationalist Congress Party, setting the stage for the upcoming elections and potentially reshaping the political landscape in Maharashtra.
