In a landmark decision, the Varanasi district court has granted permission to the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi case to conduct daily aartis five times a day at Vyas ka Tahkana. Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer representing the Hindu side, announced the timings for the aartis, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal battle.

The district court’s verdict, delivered on Wednesday, allows Hindus to offer prayers at the basement cell known as Vyas ka Tahkana. This decision has been hailed as historic by the Hindu community, with Jitendra Nath Vyas, a member of the Vyas family, expressing his joy at being granted permission to resume prayers at the site.

Vyas ka Tahkhana, named after the Vyas family to which it belonged, holds cultural and religious significance for Hindus. As one of the four ‘tahkhanas’ (cellars) in the basement of the Gyanvapi mosque, it has been a point of contention in the legal dispute.

The court’s order stipulated that arrangements for the aartis should be made within seven days. However, the administration acted swiftly to implement the ruling, opening the gates of the tahkhana late on Wednesday night. The first puja was conducted at 3:30 am, just hours after the verdict was delivered.

While the Hindu community celebrates this victory, the Muslim side has raised concerns about the expediency with which the administration carried out the court’s directives. Allegations of collusion between the administration and the plaintiffs have prompted the mosque committee to challenge the district court’s decision in the Allahabad High Court.

As the legal battle continues, the ruling sets a precedent for the resolution of longstanding disputes over religious sites and underscores the complexities of interfaith relations in India. The decision to allow Hindus to perform aartis at Vyas ka Tahkana marks a significant step forward in the quest for religious harmony and tolerance.
