Amidst escalating tensions, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has intensified its demands for the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi to be declared a Hindu temple. This fervent call comes just two days after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) released a survey report suggesting that the mosque was built atop the remnants of a pre-existing Hindu temple.

According to Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side in the contentious Gyanvapi-Kashi Vishwanath case, the ASI survey findings indicate that the mosque, constructed in the 17th century following the demolition of a grand Hindu temple by Aurangzeb, stands on sacred Hindu ground. Jain further asserts that the discovery of debris from Hindu statues in two basements during the survey provides compelling evidence to support this claim.

However, the Muslim petitioners involved in the long-standing legal battle caution against hasty conclusions, emphasizing that the ASI report does not serve as a definitive verdict.

The VHP’s latest demand extends beyond mere acknowledgment of historical findings; they now seek permission for Hindu devotees to conduct “sewa puja” at the ‘Shivlinga’ located within the disputed “Wazukhana area” of the complex.

The Gyanvapi dispute has deep roots, stretching back decades. In August 2021, a group of five women petitioned a local court, advocating for unrestricted worship rights at the Maa Shringar Gauri Sthal, an enclave within the complex adorned with idols of Hindu deities.

Amid mounting tensions, the court ordered a controversial survey of the complex in April 2022, prompting protests from various quarters. The survey’s completion in May of the same year did little to assuage tensions, with conflicting claims emerging about the discovery of the Shivling in the final hours of the exercise. The court responded by imposing heightened security measures across the complex and sealing off the contentious wazukhana area, despite disputes over its purpose between the opposing parties.

As stakeholders on both sides dig in their heels, the fate of the Gyanvapi mosque complex remains uncertain, with the specter of historical grievances and religious sentiments casting a long shadow over attempts at resolution.
