A devastating attack unfolded in the serene landscapes of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, as heavily armed terrorists launched a brazen assault on two military vehicles. The ambush, which occurred in the Thanamandi area within the Rajouri sector, resulted in the loss of four valiant Indian Army soldiers, while injuring two others.
The tragic incident took place during the transit of personnel en route to conduct a crucial cordon-and-search operation. At approximately 3:45 pm, the ambush struck at Dhatyar Morh, a treacherous spot nestled between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, under the jurisdiction of Surankote police station.
Initial reports from Army officials revealed that the attack targeted a truck and a Gypsy, which were transporting soldiers to reinforce an ongoing encounter following actionable intelligence about terrorist presence in the area.
The assailants, launching a sudden assault, unleashed gunfire on the vehicles, resulting in the immediate death of three soldiers and grievous injuries to three others. Despite reinforcements swiftly dispatched to the site, the ambush had already inflicted severe losses upon the Army personnel.
A relentless anti-terrorist operation was promptly launched, with reinforcements converging to neutralize the assailants. Regrettably, one soldier succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack on Friday morning (December 22), intensifying the somber toll of the ambush.
Amidst the chaos, concerns arose regarding the possibility that terrorists had absconded with the weapons of the fallen soldiers, heightening the complexity of the ongoing operation.
The region where this tragic incident occurred, the stretch between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, known for its dense forest cover, has witnessed prior instances of violence. Notably, this area was the site of a similar ambush earlier in the year, in which five soldiers lost their lives on April 20, further underscoring the challenges faced by security forces in this volatile terrain.
