A wave of discontent continues to surge in the wrestling community following Sakshi Malik’s retirement. Bajrang Punia, a prominent wrestler, has taken a bold step, signaling his dismay over the treatment of athletes. In a dramatic turn, he’s expressed his intention to return the prestigious Padma Shri award.

In a public statement on social media platform X, Punia addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, highlighting the unsettling situation in Indian wrestling. A video clip emerged, capturing Punia leaving his Padma Shri on the pavement outside the PM’s residence, flanked by police and media. Despite efforts to dissuade him, the 29-year-old seemed resolute in his decision.

Punia’s letter to PM Modi shed light on the long-standing issues within the wrestling fraternity, specifically citing the female wrestlers’ protest against alleged sexual harassment by Brij Bhushan Singh. He recounted the challenges faced during their 40-day protest and lamented the authorities’ disruption of their demonstration site.

Expressing his disappointment and sorrow over the mistreatment of female athletes, Punia acknowledged the honors bestowed upon him by the government. However, the prevailing circumstances have prompted him to relinquish his accolades, citing a female wrestler’s departure from the sport due to security concerns as a pivotal reason for his decision.

The wrestling community awaits a response from the government as Punia’s gesture underscores the need for urgent attention to the well-being and safety of athletes in the country.
