In a development that has ratcheted up international tensions, the United States has expressed “deep concern” over the allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the killing of a Khalistani separatist in Canada. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the issue at a press conference, signaling the gravity of the situation.

Trudeau’s allegations had ignited a diplomatic row between India and Canada, as he publicly suggested a “potential” link between the Indian government and the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force. Nijjar, a highly sought-after terrorist by India with a significant cash reward on his head, was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.

The allegations, labeled as “absurd” and “motivated” by India, led to retaliatory measures, including the expulsion of a senior Canadian diplomat by India, in response to Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official over the case.

US Ambassador to Canada David Cohen confirmed for the first time that there was “shared intelligence among Five Eyes partners” that prompted Trudeau’s offensive allegations. The Five Eyes network, comprising the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, is an intelligence alliance focused on surveillance and signals intelligence.

Secretary Blinken emphasized that the US is closely coordinating with Canada on the matter and stressed the importance of accountability in the case. He called for a thorough investigation and encouraged India to cooperate fully with Canadian authorities.

Blinken also underscored the seriousness with which the US views alleged instances of transnational repression, stating that it is a matter of international concern. He emphasized the need for all countries to refrain from engaging in such acts, highlighting the broader implications for the international system.

The situation remains tense as India and Canada navigate the fallout from these allegations and seek a resolution through diplomatic channels while international scrutiny continues to grow.
