Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, announced on Tuesday that the Union Cabinet has approved an additional subsidy of Rs 200 for a 14 kg LPG cylinder within the framework of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The Cabinet Committee for Economic Affairs has decided to enhance the existing subsidy for beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme by Rs 200.
Furthermore, the government has given the green light for an extra 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, which will raise the total count of beneficiaries under the PM Ujjwala scheme to 10.35 crores.
As part of the Ujjwala Scheme, the Union Cabinet has also sanctioned the distribution of 7.5 million new gas connections.
Effective immediately, the supplementary subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder will lead to a fiscal impact of Rs 7,680 crores during the fiscal year 2023-24, as per Anurag Thakur.
In the current scenario, the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder is Rs 1053 in Delhi, Rs 1052.50 in Mumbai, Rs 1068.50 in Chennai, and Rs 1079 in Kolkata. It is noteworthy that oil marketing companies raised the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 50 in July, following two previous hikes in May.
