Mumbai: Soon after the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government took charge in the state, the housing societies have been given a big relief as their election expenses have been reduced drastically.

The Department of Co-operation under the Maharashtra Co-operative Society’s bye-laws 1960 section 73 Volume B&C (11) had directed the Co-operative Housing Societies with less than 250 members to conduct elections by appointing an Election Observer from a panel of 340 government-approved members.

MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar had been pointing out this issue to the government for the last year so that the cost of such elections would not be an additional burden on housing societies, especially smaller ones. Due to the earlier decision, nearly 50,000 co-operative housing societies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) had to incur additional costs for holding these elections.

MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar had brought to the notice of the Legislative Assembly how a small Co-operative Housing Society with 40 members in his Bandra West constituency was made to hold the elections and how the election Observer had levied a charge of Rs 21,000 on this society.

Already these 50,000 co-operative housing societies are struggling with the Corona pandemic and its after-effects on people’s earnings and to top it all they were made to bear the burden of additional costs and unjust exorbitant fees collected from these election observers in the name of election expenses. Hence he was pursuing to reduce this cost.

Finally, now the new government has decided in this regard and has reduced the burden on the societies. The societies with up to 100 members will be charged Rs.7500, and for unopposed elections, the expenditure limit of Rs 3500 has been fixed by the government. This will be a great relief to these societies.
