Mumbai: Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday approved the nomination of senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar to the post of Leader of Opposition in the lower house. His name was proposed by fellow partyman Jayant Patil.

Pawar served as Deputy Chief Minister in the former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. He had handled the Finance portfolio in the previous MVA regime. The seven-time MLA from Baramati constituency, was also the Pune district Guardian Minister.

Congratulating Pawar, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the NCP leader is not only a versatile speaker but also a disciplined and a blunt personality. Calling him a popular face among the state’s youth, Shinde said the former Deputy Chief Minister has a grip over grass root issues. Considering Pawar’s vast experience in educational, sports, diary, cooperative and agriculture sector, the Chief Minister hoped that Pawar will apprise his role as the government’s watchdog with full zeal and enthusiasm.

In his congratulatory speech, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the doors of Mantralaya used to remain open during the previous dispensation, only because Ajit Pawar used his office to the fullest and ensured that people could meet him for their problems. He hoped that Pawar, with a positive attitude and farsightedness, will help this government with his advice and guidance.

Newly elected Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narvekar said Ajit Pawar has all the qualities of a successful statesman and hoped that he will help in the smooth proceedings of the house.

In his reply to the congratulatory motion, Ajit Pawar thanked everyone for the opportunity and promised to work with the government for the welfare of people. He said every issue can be resolved through proper discussion. Pawar said he understands that there is no need to oppose everything and anything that the government proposes but emphasized that he will ensure that no law is passed in the assembly without proper discussion.

Pawar also urged the government to hold regular sittings of both the Houses of the state legislature for a prolonged period of time as the same was not possible over the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
