Mumbai: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending powerful tremors across large parts of West Bengal and the northeastern region of India. The quake struck between 10:08 am and 10:10 am, with residents in Kolkata and multiple districts reporting sudden ground movement lasting a few seconds.

According to early assessments, the tremors were felt in Kolkata, Malda, Nadia, Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and several adjoining areas. The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake’s epicentre was located near Ghorasal in Dhaka, at a shallow depth of 10 km, which intensified the impact across neighbouring regions.

Parts of Northeast India also experienced the tremors, the USGS added. This Bangladesh quake comes on the heels of two moderate earthquakes that struck Pakistan and Afghanistan earlier on Friday, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), making it the third significant seismic event of the day in the subcontinent.

In Salt Lake Sector 3, a resident described the moment on social media, saying, “the fans and sofa were shaking for at least seven to eight seconds,” highlighting the intensity felt in some pockets of Kolkata. Despite the widespread tremors, no reports of casualties or major structural damage have emerged so far.

The earthquake briefly halted the ongoing Bangladesh vs. Ireland Test match in Dhaka, prompting officials to pause play as a precaution. The match resumed shortly after, with authorities confirming that no damage was reported at the venue.
