Raipur: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against Naxalism, 14 Naxalites were killed in a prolonged encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district near the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Among those killed was a top Naxal leader carrying a bounty of ₹1 crore on his head.

The operation, which began late Monday night, continued into the early hours of Tuesday, officials confirmed. A fresh exchange of fire erupted in the dense forest area under the Mainpur police station limits, resulting in the deaths of 12 more Naxalites following the initial skirmish.

The joint operation involved personnel from Chhattisgarh’s District Reserve Guard (DRG), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), and Odisha’s Special Operation Group (SOG).

Earlier on Monday, two women Naxalites were killed, and one CoBRA commando sustained superficial injuries during the initial phase of the operation. The injured commando received immediate medical attention and is reported to be stable.

Superintendent of Police Nikhil Rakhecha said the encounter took place in a remote forest area along the border, where the security forces had launched an anti-Naxal operation based on intelligence inputs.

“This is a major success for the security forces. Neutralizing such a large number of Naxalites, including a high-ranking leader, underscores the effectiveness of coordinated operations between Chhattisgarh and Odisha forces,” Rakhecha stated.
