Delhi: Security forces have dealt a major setback to Maoist networks in Odisha after eliminating at least six Naxalites, including a senior commander, during two separate operations in Kandhamal district, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The first exchange of fire took place late Wednesday night inside the Gumma forest area under the Belghar police station limits. During this operation, security personnel neutralised two armed Maoists following an intense encounter.
A second and more significant operation unfolded early Thursday morning in a forested region under Chakapad police station. Four more Naxalites were killed in this encounter, including Ganesh Uike, a high-ranking Maoist leader considered one of the most influential figures in the CPI (Maoist) organisation.
Police officials said Uike was a member of the Maoist central committee and carried a cash reward of ₹1.1 crore. At 69, he was one of the oldest and most experienced commanders in the movement and had been active across multiple states for decades. He was known by several aliases and hailed originally from Telangana’s Nalgonda district.
During the operations, security forces recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition, including INSAS rifles and a .303 rifle, indicating the presence of a well-armed Maoist group in the area. Identification of the remaining Maoists killed in the encounters is still underway.
Odisha Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania described the operation as a major success, stating that the elimination of a central committee member had severely weakened Maoist strength in the state. He added that coordinated anti-Naxal operations are continuing along the Kandhamal–Ganjam border and more breakthroughs are expected.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the security forces, calling the operation a decisive step toward ending left-wing extremism. He reiterated the government’s commitment to making India free from Naxalism by March 31, 2026, and said Odisha was now close to achieving that goal.
